The table below shows the adjusted shooting percentage for each team. This metric is designed to aggregate the offense’s ability to put the ball in the net with with the defense’s ability to keep the ball out of the net. We wanted to have a single metric because that would make it easier to compare teams against each other. The “Off Shooting %” column is the percentage of the offenses total shots that result in a goal. The “Def Shooting %” column is the number of the opponent’s shots that result in a goal. The last column is the aggregate, which adds the offensive shooting percentage to the gap between the defense’s mark and the league average. A future post will explain this in more detail
This is not exactly a novel thought, but since we have not had a good way to compare on-field performance, it was about time. And when you combine this adjusted shooting percentage with possession advantage, you get a pretty good sense of how well a team has played.
