Top Individual Performances (Week 11 WLAX)
Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that she doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here.
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats to a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings.
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent?

Top Single Game Scores of the week |

#1 – Sorana Larson (UC Davis) – 10.70 goals added
Apr 24 vs Fresno State Opp ELO: 1236
Larson managed a double-dip this week, but her game against FSU was “the game” of the week. Her 53% shooting mark in this one nearly mirrored her season average (52.2%) and it reflects her biggest improvement over last season when she shot just 44.8%.
And for the Aggies overall, her production has been a big part of the overall increase in offensive efficiency. As a team, they are putting up an impressive 38.5% offensive efficiency in 2021. Career Stat

#2 – Dymin Gerow (UMBC) – 10.44 goals added
Apr 24 vs Binghamton Opp ELO: 1158
I had to check the official NCAA site just to make sure that I had captured the right score off the live stats for this game. 27 goals!!!
And Gerow was the straw that stirred the drink for the Retrievers. How’s this for an efficient Saturday. 7 goals on 7 shots plus 3 assists to boot. And here’s the kicker; every single one of those goals was unassisted. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: offenses need a player who can just go get their own shot. The addition of Gerow to this offense is probably the biggest reason that the Retrievers are at 33.2% on the offensive side. She’s shooting a whopping 57% on a 6 shots/gm average. That helps a lot. #3 – Erin Kerstetter (Wagner) – 8.13 goals added
Apr 21 vs LIU Opp ELO: 1319
LIU’s defense held Wagner to one of their worst offensive performances of the season. In part, they did it by limiting second chance opportunities. They also appear to have adopted a mentality of making the Seahawks one-dimensional. The Kerstetter dimension.
Unfortunately, she put up 6 goals and added 2 assists. She won’t be happy with the 5 turnovers, but they are easier to swallow when you get the W. Career Stat

#4 – Sorana Larson (UC Davis) – 7.97 goals added
Apr 22 vs California Opp ELO: 1109
Double-dip part 2. FSU is the 96th rated opponent-adjusted defense. Cal is 60th. So you can make the argument that Larson played just as well in this one as in her 10.7 EGA game.
This was also a much slower-paced game. The Aggies only had 41 possessions against the Bears vs 65 against the Dogs. Career Stat

#5 – Emily Vervlied (Boston U) – 7.81 goals added
Apr 24 vs Colgate Opp ELO: 1543
Welcome to the 10-point club Miss Vervlied. She managed to set a season-high in both goals and assists in this game. It’s even more impressive knowing that it was against the 2nd best defense that BU has faced all season.
Her ’21 season has been one of improvement in almost every facet of the game. Shooting percentage is up; excess goals is up, assists are way up, turnover rate is down. Might explain why she has almost tripled her weighted play share from last season. Career Stat

#6 – Megan Halczuk (UMBC) – 7.56 goals added
Apr 24 vs Binghamton Opp ELO: 1158
What does 27 goals get you? Enough production to go around. Specifically, enough production to land 2 players in the top-6 spots of the weekly EGA list.
While Gerow was the finisher, the 14 draw controls that Halczuk pulled down gave the Retrievers the chance to put up such staggering numbers. This was their 2nd highest possession-margin of the year (+12). Oh, and she had 5 assists to boot. Career Stat

#8 – Kennon Moon (Penn) – 7.30 goals added
Apr 22 vs La Salle Opp ELO: 1293
Welcome to 2021 Penn. The Quakers get their first win on…checks calendar…Apr 22. Normally, that would be a terrible sign, but of course, 2021 is nor a normal season.
Full stat line for Moon though, 4 GBs to go with 2 assists and 4 goals on 5 shots. It’s already clear that her role in this offense is going to be a lot larger than it was last season. Now the question is whether we’ll get to see her play again. Career Stat

#9 – Maggie Schneidereith (Johns Hopkins) – 7.30 goals added
Apr 24 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1733
Schneidereith landed the first appearance on this list for the Jays in 2021 thanks to a 70% shooting day against the Wolverines. Combine that accuracy with opportunity (10 shots; season high) and you have the recipe for a 7+ EGA day.
This was the best offensive game for Hopkins in their B1G-only campaign. Their 47.6% offensive efficiency mark was, amazingly, 14 percentage points better than their 2nd best game (33% against PSU). They shot it great as a team (55.6%) and managed one of their lowest turnover rates of the season. Nice time to be rounding in to form. Career Stat
