Top Individual Performances (Week 11 MLAX)
Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here.
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats to a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings.
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent?

#1 – Austin Deskewicz (Stony Brook) – 7.49 goals added
Apr 24 vs UMBC Opp ELO: 1585
When a FOGO starts putting up multiple points, there is a good chance that they will end up here.
Deskewicz did just that in an OT loss to UMBC. In his first 2 seasons, he was much more of a true FOGO. This year, though, he’s been much more involved in what happens after the win. His weighted play share, which removes the actual faceoff win from the calculation has jumped to 10.8% in 2021 from 2.9% last year. Career Stat

#2 – Ryan Lanchbury (Richmond) – 7.30 goals added
Apr 25 vs Mercer Opp ELO: 1312
Lanchbury had a quiet few weeks since his 6.99 EGA game against Bellarmine. But Mercer let him roam free, to the tune of a season-high 5 goals. Oh, and 7 assists.
For his career, has assisted on 20% of all Spiders’ assists. That puts him in the 96th percentile for that stat. It also undersells the 2021 he’s having because this year, he has a full 36% of all Richmond assists, which is, as you can probably guess, in the top percentile. Career Stat

#4 – Christian Mule (Lehigh) – 6.97 goals added
Apr 24 vs Bucknell Opp ELO: 1506
Brother Cameron had the big goal against Notre Dame, but it was Lehigh’s Christian that snagged a spot on the top EGA list this week. In his 2nd season, Mule’s big accomplishment has been to cut an already low turnover rate (.35 in 2020 and .24 this year). Combine that with more opportunity (2 more shots per game) and his season EGA average is up from 2.65 in 2020 to 3.33 this year.

#5 – Mike Sisselberger (Lehigh) – 6.70 goals added
Apr 24 vs Bucknell Opp ELO: 1506
Sisselberger was at it again in this one. Not much more to say. The Mountain Hawks are the #1 rated faceoff unit this year, whether you want to use the raw or opponent-adjusted ratings.

#6 – Jacob Alexander (Bryant) – 6.56 goals added
Apr 24 vs Sacred Heart Opp ELO: 1261
This was a wild game. Bryant had 69 offensive possessions; their previous high this year was 51 against Wagner. That was thanks to a really fast-paced approach for the Bulldogs, whose possessions averaged just 25 seconds. Their previous record was 34 seconds against…Wagner.
The offense has struggled this year, at least compared to what was a strong season in 2020. Their efficiency in 2021 is just 27.6%, compared to 32.8% last year. Perhaps the fast pace is a way to get things going again. Career Stat

#7 – Sean Westley (St. Bonaventure) – 6.13 goals added
Apr 24 vs Siena Opp ELO: 1251
We have spoken a lot about the Bonnie’s defense this year, but for once, we are talking about the offensive end of the field. Sean Westley had himself a day against Siena.
The 60% shooting mark is of a piece with his season-long improvement in that facet of the game. He shot just 14% last year, with limited chances (1.4 shots/gm). So far this year, his shooting percentage is 39.6%, and he’s doing that on 6.9 shot.gm. As a team, shooting has been a relative strength this year for STB. When it will translate into offensive efficiency is the real question. Career Stat

#8 – Zach Cole (Saint Joseph’s) – 6.11 goals added
Apr 24 vs LIU Opp ELO: 1469
Cole is on a roll. 20+ faceoff wins in 3 of the last 4 games. This is a guy that didn’t look like the FOGO we saw last year early on in 2021, but I think he’s found his stride at this point.
And for whatever issues they had early on, the Hawks have managed their best possession margin on record. They are averaging +6.7 more possessions than their opponents this year. That is a big big part of the 7 game win streak they’ve been on since conference play started. Career Stat

#9 – Nick Rowlett (Michigan) – 6.00 goals added
Apr 25 vs Rutgers Opp ELO: 1736
I was really expecting Rutgers to be the surprise FO power this year in the B1G, but it’s been Michigan, hands-down. Rowlett had another strong outing, winning 18 of 29 face-offs, and keeping Michigan in it with a +6 possession margin.
The issue with Michigan’s possession game is clearing. Last year, they managed a +1.4 possession/gm advantage, despite winning just 50.7% of their faceoffs. In 2021, they are negative on possession margin (-0.2/gm) despite winning 55.2% of their draws. Faceoffs are the most visible way to gain a possession-edge, but clears are crucial too. If they could have cleared like they did in 2020, perhaps one of these one-goal losses could have been one-goal wins. Career Stat

#10 – Jakob Phaup (Syracuse) – 5.94 goals added
Apr 24 vs Virginia Opp ELO: 1763
Well, that was unexpected. Sort of. Cuse has now won the faceoff battle in 2 of their ACC games. And both of those games were against Virginia. Here is a bizarre stat: against all non-UVA teams this year, Syracuse has won 44.4% of the faceoffs. Against UVA, 76.7%.
The danger for the Cavs is that everyone else figures out what Syracuse is doing against Petey LaSalla. The danger for Cuse is that they will have to play someone not named Virginia. Career Stat
