Top Individual Performances (Week 10 WLAX)
Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that she doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here.
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats to a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings.
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent?

#1 – Shannon Kavanagh (Florida) – 9.46 goals added
Apr 18 vs Vanderbilt Opp ELO: 1727
Kavanagh enjoyed her weekend against the Commodores, and she especially enjoyed the 2nd of the two matchups. In the first game, she only took 5 shots, but in the rematch, the Gators found a way to get their top-scorer more chances. She did not waste them.
Her season has been remarkably consistent, which is always what you want from your best players. This marked the 10th out of her last 11 games where she has shot 50% or better. Career Stat

#2 – Charlotte North (Boston College) – 9.22 goals added
Apr 17 vs Notre Dame Opp ELO: 2053
Who else? With this weekend’s games behind her, North has taken over the top spot in the country as far as EGA/game.
The last two games really stand out though because of the opponent. Notre Dame is the 3rd rated opp-adjusted defense in the entire country. And she still put up 10 goals on 19 shots, plus 2 assists and just a single turnover across the two Eagles’ wins. Career Stat

#3 – Marina Lazarides (Navy) – 8.94 goals added
Apr 14 vs George Mason Opp ELO: 1361
Whoa. Marina Lazarides makes her debut on the weekly EGA list with a bang. 7 goals on 8 shots will do that.
Probably more impressive is that all 7 goals were unassisted. I’ll say it again, healthy offenses need players who can make their own offense. She provided that in this one. It’s all the more remarkable given that her previous high this year was 3 goals. So excuse me if I’m surprised by a somewhat out-of-nowhere 10 point day. Career Stat

#4 – Olivia Dirks (Penn State) – 8.85 goals added
Apr 15 vs Rutgers Opp ELO: 1311
Rutgers got the win, but they didn’t do it by reining in the Nits’ offense, or Dirks herself. Penn State put up a 37.2% efficiency mark (2nd best this year), and Dirks had herself a day, fueling the push with 5 goals and 4 assists.
In her 2nd season, Dirks has become a force for PSU. Turnovers, shooting percentage, assist rate, excess goals. Pick a category and she’s head and shoulders above where she was as freshman. Career Stat

#5 – Charlotte North (Boston College) – 7.50 goals added
Apr 15 vs Notre Dame Opp ELO: 2064
You may have guessed that we’d be seeing Miss North here again. And you were right!
She didn’t have the same numbers in this one, but this was actually the game where the Eagles had the higher offensive efficiency marks. So, you know, fair trade. Career Stat

#6 – Kaitlyn Dowsett (Siena) – 7.49 goals added
Apr 13 vs Iona Opp ELO: 1128
Siena has managed so few games this year (they are now just 4-0) that Dowsett doesn’t qualify for many of the league-wide ranking tables. Fortunately, the EGA leaders list has no such restrictions.
And in this one, she had about as good a game as you’ll see in terms of efficiency. 6 goals on 8 shots, plus the 3 helpers and 0 turnovers. Career Stat

#7 – Sydney Watson (UConn) – 7.48 goals added
Apr 16 vs Villanova Opp ELO: 1440
The Wildcats found a way to slow her down in game #2, but not before Watson went off in the first matchup. For teams playing UConn, comparing the approach from game 1 to game 2 will likely be fruitful.
But let’s celebrate the 7-point outing before we get all dour. After all, this is the player with this 5th highest per-game EGA average of anyone in the country. You start to wonder if that is part of what happened in game #2; all the production this year could mean that we are starting to see some tired legs. Her 16% play share puts here squarely in the top percentile of any player nation-wide. Career Stat

#8 – Stephanie Croke (UMass) – 7.38 goals added
Apr 18 vs Duquesne Opp ELO: 1445
Croke had a pretty solid game against the Dukes in their first matchup. 3 goals on 3 shots and a 5-point-total. In this one it was the same effectiveness, but with more opportunity. In this one, she took 11 shots (season-high) and still managed a 46% shooting mark. Add in the 3 assists and you pretty quickly get into top-EGA range.
Will be curious to see if her trend of more chances continues the rest of the year. Career Stat

#9 – Karson Harris (Drexel) – 7.15 goals added
Apr 13 vs Towson Opp ELO: 1783
Towson is the 13th rated opp-adjusted defense, so this was not 7 goals against a swiss-cheese opposition. This game was Harris’ 4th best EGA outing of the year.
I love to see careers like she has put together so far. Just steady improvement in every facet of the game. 2021 marks her best eGoals/shot season, her most goals/g, her lowest turnover rate and of course, her highest EGA/game season. Career Stat

Apr 17 vs Oregon Opp ELO: 1278
Great day for UC Davis and Seifert. 6 goals is a season-high and for the offense, it was their best efficiency day (46.3%) since Feb 21 when they played…checks notes…oh…Oregon.
