Top Individual Performances (Week 6 WLAX)
Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that she doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here.
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats to a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings.
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent?

#1 – Belle Martire (William and Mary) – 9.16 goals added
Mar 20 vs Campbell Opp ELO: 1177
Martire recorded her fourth game with 6+ EGA in this one. The trend continues: when she’s gotten touches this year, she is lighting up the scoreboard. Then some other times, you forget she’s in the lineup.
When she has taken more than 4 shots in a game this year, William & Mary is 3-0. When she takes 4 or fewer shots, they are 0-3. It’s always tough to distill down a team’s wins and losses into a single stat, but I think that gets at a big part of the formula for W&M this year. Career Stat

#2 – Izzy Scane (Northwestern) – 8.37 goals added
Mar 19 vs Rutgers Opp ELO: 1436
The EGA hot potato game between Lauren Gilbert and Izzy Scane continued this weekend. On Friday, it was Scane’s turn to have a big day with 10 goals and an 8.37 EGA line. It’s somewhat odd for a player to have such a huge stat line without recording any assists, but not unheard of.
One interesting note is that this was the 3rd weekend double-header that NU has played so far this year. It’s the 2nd time in a row that Izzy Scane took fewer shots in the 2nd game than the first. I’m guessing that defenses who got burned on Friday are not really up for doing it again in the 2nd match-up. Up next: 2 big games against Maryland. Career Stat

#3 – Madeline Seims (Wagner) – 8.22 goals added
Mar 20 vs Merrimack Opp ELO: 1392
The Seahawks had on their racing cleats in this one. Their average possession in this game lasted just 28.7 seconds, which is just a bit faster than their game against Villanova, and the fastest pace they’ve played at this year. Pair that with a season-high offensive efficiency and what do you get? 22 goals. That’s what you get.
And 7 of those goals came courtesy of Seims who continued her hot shooting. The fact that she is shooting 41%,which reducing her turnover rate to .22 (career best) is a big part of the reason why Wagner is posted their best offensive efficiency since at least 2015. Career Stat

#4 – Sydney Watson (UConn) – 8.02 goals added
Mar 21 vs Marquette Opp ELO: 1640
I need to apologize to Sydney Watson. This should be her 2nd appearance on the weekly list, but I didn’t realize that UConn had played UMass on Mar 7 until after the list for that week was published. Her 9.71 EGA in that game eclipsed the mark that she set against Marquette on Sunday.
But since we live in the present, let’s dig into that Marquette stat line. 50% shooting resulted in 5 goals on 10 shots, most of those goals unassisted. She added in 2 GBs and an assist to round things out. Watson is another example of a player that has increased her productivity thanks to better ball security. Her TO rate (.29) is down from .40 last year which has led to an increase in shot attempts (8.0 vs 6.3). Her shooting percentage is down from last year, so if she’s able to get that back on track, expect to see a lot more of her on this list. Career Stat

#5 – Sondra Dickey (Lehigh) – 7.58 goals added
Mar 20 vs Army Opp ELO: 1679
Sondra Dickey’s season has been an odd one. It is reminiscent of our number 1 player this week (Belle Martire) in that she’s had some huge games and some games where she was all but non-existent. This game was the former. 6 goals on 12 shots brings her shooting percentage up to 45.9%.
But then she’s also had a game where she took zero shots (American) and a game where she went 0/4 (La Salle). The flip side is that against the best D that Lehigh has played (St. Joe’s 11th), she took 9 shots and scored 3 goals. I’m guessing that this is a situation where defenses are choosing to key on Dickey in some cases. Fortunately for Lehigh, in the 2 games where she had her worst shooting, her teammates picked up the slack and they still got the win. Career Stat

#6 – Ashley Britton (High Point) – 7.51 goals added
Mar 17 vs Coastal Carolina Opp ELO: 1722
Ashley Britton is going to have to start paying rent for her room on the top EGA list. Kidding kidding.
But here she is again, after a 7-point day against Coastal Carolina. The interesting thing for HPU and Britton is that she was this productive without having a dominating role in the offense. Compare this with the Vanderbilt game. Against CCSU, her play share was just 9.3%. Against Vandy, it was 18.4%. In this game, she generated 7.5 EGA; in that one, it was 7.7 EGA. The kicker though is that the HPU offense scored on 35.6% of their possessions against CCSU (a win) vs 32.5% against Vanderbilt (a loss). Career Stat

#7 – Charlotte North (Boston College) – 7.44 goals added
Mar 20 vs Hofstra Opp ELO: 1704
Last week’s number one player lands at No. 7 this week. But this was a better day for the BC offense in general. They scored on 51.4% of their possessions, which is the 2nd highest mark they’ve hit this year.
Part of the reason the EGA figures are lower is that this game was played at a much slower pace than the UVA game. Against the Cavaliers, Boston College had 48 offensive possessions, that lasted 37s on average. In this one, they had 37 possessions (2nd lowest of the year) which lasted 45s on average. Lower EGA, but that’s perfectly fine with the Eagles I’m sure. You’ll take fewer possessions and higher efficiency any day. Career Stat

#8 – Maddie Myers (UC Davis) – 7.31 goals added
Mar 21 vs Arizona State Opp ELO: 1674
Someone put a fire blanket on those Sun Devils. After the big win over USC, they followed it up with another strong game against UCD.
But this paragraph is supposed to be about Maddie Myers, who made her second appearance on the weekly EGA list for her 56% shooting day. ASU has the 36th rated defensive unit (after adjusting for opponent strength), and that was what was did in Davis. They turned the ball over on 42% of their possessions in this game. The only game with a worse mark was their game against Stanford. Surprise surprise, this game was their second lowest offensive efficiency behind…the Stanford game. Career Stat

#9 – Shannon Kavanagh (Florida) – 6.96 goals added
Mar 19 vs Temple Opp ELO: 1525
The two Temple vs Florida games over the weekend looked eerily similar. In one game, Florida scored 14 goals, in the other, 15. And even for Kavanagh, it was the same story. In the Friday game, she ended up with 6 points and 6.96 EGA. In the Sunday game, it was 7 points and 6.36 EGA.
Even the efficiency numbers for Florida were basically the same in both games. Must have been weird to watch the Sunday game; I’m sure fans felt like they were watching a replay. Career Stat

#10 – Hanna Hilcoff (Oregon) – 6.93 goals added
Mar 20 vs California Opp ELO: 1146
First appearance for the Ducks on this list this year. I think I jinxed them when I tweeted how they had an upset brewing when they were up 13-11. Stanford, of course, went on to score the next 6 goals to win 17-13. Sorry Ducks.
But Hanna Hilcoff makes her inaugural appearance on this list because of her game against the Cal Bears on Saturday. Of note this year for Hilcoff is how many more shots she’s getting. Through 5 games, she is averaging 11 shots/gm, after just 6.1 last year. Career Stat
