Top Individual Performances (Week 4 WLAX)
Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that she doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here.
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats to a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings.
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent?

#1 – Siena Gore (Kennesaw State) – 10.70 goals added
Mar 6 vs Winthrop Opp ELO: 1317
Kennesaw State gets their first win of the season, thanks to a wildly efficiency day from Siena Gore. She ended with 10 points after shooting 73% on 11 shots. Her usage rate has really exploded so far in 3 games for KSU.
Her weighted play share is 20.3% after hovering around 15% for the past 3 seasons. Weirdly, she is not taking more shots or dishing out more assists this year. So that increase is coming from the non-scoring aspects of the game, caused turnovers, ground balls, etc. But while she is not shooting more this year (7.3 shots / gm after 7.4 last year), she’s connecting at a much higher rate (63.6%). And her excess goal rate, which accounts for the likelihood of a random shooter making a given shot, is currently at career high levels (an extra goal every 8 shots), Career Stat

#2 – Maddie Howe (Notre Dame) – 7.94 goals added
Mar 6 vs Robert Morris Opp ELO: 1696
Maddie Howe had to sit on her opening game 0 for 6 shooting day for longer than usual. The Irish played Vandy on Feb 13, and then didn’t get to suit up again until this past Saturday. Howe redeemed herself with a 50% shooting day, 7.94 EGA and the 2nd spot on our list this week.
In an interesting bit of trivia, the Irish offense was almost exactly as efficient in the first game (42.2%) and the second game (42.3%). You don’t see that every day. Career Stat

#3 – Maddie Myers (UC Davis) – 7.92 goals added
Mar 5 vs San Diego State Opp ELO: 1493
Sometimes the weekday games fly under the radar, but Maddie Myers’ performance deserves its recognition. On Friday, against SDSU she had one of those all-around performances that really fill up the stat-sheet. She shot great, picked up a bunch of GBs, dished out several assists and only turned it over one time.
The UCD offense is off to one of their best starts in years and you have to think that the production they are getting from Myers is a big part of it, especially since her role has expanded pretty steadily from her first year (just a 3.5% weighted play share) Career Stat

#4 – Ava Vasile (Vermont) – 7.77 goals added
Mar 4 vs Hartford Opp ELO: 757
Through 2 games, Vasile has been a much needed offensive boost for Vermont. As a team, they are scoring on 30.4% of their possessions, up from 28.3% last year. And her role has really increased through two games. She took 4.9 shots/gm last year and so far, she’s taken 8.5 shots/gm this year. Her shooting percentage has dropped a bit, but she has more than made up for that with a larger drop in her turnover rate.
The upshot is that she’s contributed a full 2 extra EGA per game this year for the Catamounts. Career Stat

#5 – Ashley Britton (High Point) – 7.74 goals added
Mar 7 vs Vanderbilt Opp ELO: 1539
Here are the opponent-adjusted efficiencies for the past 5 HPU games:
Mercer: 24.1% Just a slow steady march upwards. As the top share player for the Panthers, Britton has a lot of responsibility for the trend. Her .33 share-adjusted turnover rate is a career low through 6 games. Career Stat

#6 – Dana Joss (Longwood) – 7.39 goals added
Mar 6 vs William and Mary Opp ELO: 1329
Well this was unexpected. Coming into this game, Joss’ season EGA average was .86. She had taken all of 9 shots prior to this game. And then, against W&M, she had 7.39 EGA. Go figure.
A big improvement area was in ball security. She had 10 turnovers in 4 games prior to this one, but against the Tribe, she didn’t register a TO. Career Stat

#7 – Mary Soures (Siena) – 7.30 goals added
Mar 7 vs Canisius Opp ELO: 1376
This was the first game for Siena, so you might have expected some rust, but no, not on this day. Yes, Canisius is the 100th ranked opp-adjusted defense, but still, a 42.5% offensive efficiency mark is impressive.
Even after adjusting for that, Siena’s performance lands them in the No. 6 slot for opponent-adjusted offensive efficiency. While they may not end the year there, it’s the continuation of a growth trend for Siena overall. Here are their opponent-adjusted offensive efficiencies going back to 2017 ’17: 25.6% Soures was great in this one and as the top share player on the team, she’ll be a big part of the answer to the above, whichever way it turns out. #8 – Belle Martire (William and Mary) – 6.80 goals added
Mar 6 vs Longwood Opp ELO: 1273
The rollercoaster continues. We’ve talked a few times about how Belle Martire’s season has been up and down. One week, she’s pouring in 8 goals and 10.43 EGA (ODU). That game was sandwiched by 2 where she took a total of 3 shots (Duke/Richmond).
In this one, she was left a bit freer, and Longwood paid the price. She scored on 63% of her 8 shots, adding 2 assists and 3 GBs. You won’t be surprised to hear that in the 2 games where she has been able to fill up the stat sheet, the Tribe is 2-0. When she’s disappeared, they are 0-2. The defensive game-plan against William & Mary this year seems awfully simple. Career Stat

#9 – Kasey Dorney (Wagner) – 6.70 goals added
Mar 6 vs Central Conn Opp ELO: 830
Through 2 games, Dorney has improved almost every aspect of her game from last year. Net positive excess shooting rate, turnovers are down, raw shooting percentage is up. She’s scored more above and beyond the increase in shots per game.
The question is how it holds up against better defenses. Villanova is ranked 95th and CCSU is 98th. Coming up, the Seahawks have the 38th ranked defense (Bryant), the 35th ranked defense (MSM twice) and the 17th ranked defense (Merrimack twice), so they’ll certainly have a chance to see how their hot start holds up against better opponents.
