Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week
#1 – Mike Madsen (St. John’s) – 7.96 goals added
Mar 7 vs Siena Opp ELO: 1422 |
I hope Mike Madsen’s family and teammates do not take this the wrong way, but this way not a name I was familiar with before seeing the rankings for this week. And that is probably on me; after all, Madsen is the 13th rated player in our season long Statistical Tewaaraton analysis. But it’s hard to ignore a game when someone just puts their team on their back, like Madsen did in this one. 5 of those 6 goals were unassisted and he dominated the Red Storm’s play shares in this one. In short, Madsen was the offense for St. John’s in this one, and Siena couldn’t stop it. |

#2 – Matt Moore (Virginia) – 7.86 goals added
Mar 8 vs Brown Opp ELO: 1594 |
While the outcome was probably not what UVA was hoping for, Matt Moore certainly had a day. This was the 3rd time that Moore led the Wahoos in EGA, and it was his highest play share percentage of the year (16.1%). His day was extremely well-rounded too, which is a good sign for Virginia. Of his 7 goals, 3 were unassisted and 4 came off assists. |

#3 – Ashton Wood (Mercer) – 7.77 goals added
Mar 4 vs St. Bonaventure Opp ELO: 1263 |
In this one, he scored 1 goal and added 1 assist against St. Bonaventure in a game that Mercer won 17 – 8. Add in 15 ground balls and 23 faceoff wins and you’ve got a pretty full stat sheet. No trillion-club here. Repeat this against a team stronger than St. Bonaventure, and he’ll really get people talking. |

#4 – TD Ierlan (Yale) – 7.23 goals added
Mar 7 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1458 |
I’m guessing that not too many people saw Ierlan’s west coast performance against Michigan, but it was more of the same. Dominant at the faceoff X against an overmatched opponent. Yale seems on their way to another significant possession advantage in 2020. So far, they’ve been +25 in just 4 games. |

#5 – Marc Orourke (Bryant) – 7.04 goals added
Mar 7 vs Stony Brook Opp ELO: 1507 |
On the day, he tallied 7 goals and 1 assist against Stony Brook, in a game that Bryant won 15 – 11. He also threw in 2 ground balls for good measure. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1507, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |

#6 – Chris Gray (North Carolina) – 7.03 goals added
Mar 6 vs Furman Opp ELO: 1334 |
Yes, it was Furman, but still, it was 9 points. Gray really took over in this one, posting his highest play shares of the season (14.4%). If anything, you wonder if maybe Coach Breschi should have taken advantage of the opportunity presented by Furman. Of this 5 goals, 4 came in the fourth quarter when this game was well out-of-reach. Certainly there is a benefit to your top lines building as much chemistry as possible, but surely there is also value in developing depth. This is the element of strategy that I am most curious about. How do coaches decide when to prioritize building depth vs increasing scoring margin. |
#7 – Logan Wisnauskas (Maryland) – 6.77 goals added
Mar 7 vs Albany Opp ELO: 1474 |
Surprisingly, this was actually the first time that Wisnauskas has led the Terps in EGA this season. And it was just the 2nd time that his play share topped 10%. For someone who is currently 13th in the overall Statistical Tewaaraton, this is a bit surprising, but it also speaks to the consistency with which he’s put up EGA value. |
#8 – Kyle Gallagher (Penn) – 6.76 goals added
Mar 8 vs Saint Joseph’s Opp ELO: 1670 |
Penn went 1-1 this weekend in Philadelphia, but Gallagher was the top EGA guy in both games, as he’s been 4 times in 5 games (he was 2nd against Duke). Interesting trend developing here though. In 5 games, his FO win pct has gone 51, 58, 66, 76, 77%. And this last performance was against the other guy with a claim as the top FOGO in the nation (Zach Cole). Penn has put themselves in the bubble conversation with 3 losses and a tough Ivy League schedule coming up. But if Gallagher is able to continue this trend, especially with Yale looming, I like the Quakers chances. |

#9 – Dylan Beckwith (Fairfield) – 6.65 goals added
Mar 3 vs LIU Opp ELO: 1412 |
In this one, he scored 4 goals and added 3 assists against LIU in a game that Fairfield won 19 – 15. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 6 ground balls. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: LIU was the #-36 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#10 – Sam Stephan (Mount St Marys) – 6.28 goals added
Mar 7 vs Utah Opp ELO: 1476 |
Raise your hand if you called UMass as the only team in D1 with two top-5 RPI wins. Anyone? Now, to be fair, Hochman was not deciding factor in their wins over Yale and Ohio State. Against Albany, he probably was. The Danes offense actually scored at a better clip than UMass in this game. But thanks to the FOGO play (along with 6 failed clears by Albany), the Minutemen had a whopping +17 possession advantage. That is the 10th best possession advantage any team has had all season. Per-possession stats tend to go right out the window when you get that many more chances than your opponent. |

#12 – Brendan Nichtern (Army) – 6.17 goals added
Mar 7 vs Lafayette Opp ELO: 1170 |
Army’s run as the flavor-of-the-week has faded, but Brendan Nichtern is just coming on. He’s up to #2 in the season-long EGA ratings, just a few points behind Michael Sowers. |
#13 – Peyton Smith (Marist) – 6.03 goals added
Mar 7 vs Delaware Opp ELO: 1557 |
Vintage FOGO day here. in a game that Marist lost 15 – 14 to Delaware. He also threw in 16 ground balls and 22 faceoff wins for good measure. Repeat this against a team stronger than Delaware, and he’ll really get people talking. |

Vintage FOGO day here. in a game that Denver won 14 – 11 over Notre Dame. Add in 15 ground balls and 22 faceoff wins and you’ve got a pretty full stat sheet. No trillion-club here. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1610, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |

#18 – Angelo Petrakis (Cornell) – 5.73 goals added
Mar 8 vs Penn State Opp ELO: 1772 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 2 goals in a game that Cornell won 18 – 17 over Penn State. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 5 ground balls and 18 faceoff wins. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. Throw in Penn State’s ELO rating of 1772, and these stats take on whole new meaning. |
#19 – Austin Popovich (Robert Morris) – 5.67 goals added
Mar 4 vs Detroit Opp ELO: 1478 |
