Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week
#1 – Alex Jarzembowski (Detroit) – 8.08 goals added
Feb 18 vs Bellarmine Opp ELO: 1366 |
I’m sure he’s very generous most days, but on this day, he tallied 3 goals without an assist in a game that Detroit won 20 – 13 over Bellarmine. In addition to the goals, he did contribute 7 ground balls and 24 faceoff wins. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. Repeat this against a team stronger than Bellarmine, and he’ll really get people talking. |

#2 – Michael Sowers (Princeton) – 8.02 goals added
Feb 18 vs Colgate Opp ELO: 1422 |
The game against Colgate highlighted Sowers the distributor, as he ended the day with 11 assists, with 3 goals coming on just 8 shots. That said, it also included an ankle-breaking highlight from Sowers that showed off his particular skill set. |
#3 – Michael Sowers (Princeton) – 7.77 goals added
Feb 22 vs Virginia Opp ELO: 1725 |
The game against UVA showed off Sowers the goal scorer, as he took 15 shots, scored 4 goals, and sprinkled in 4 assists. And all 4 of those goals were unassisted. If there is a brewing risk for the Tigers, it’s that Sowers has 19.1% of their play shares, and there will certainly be a time when someone else has to step up. Will the supporting cast be able to do it? |
#4 – Jake Carraway (Georgetown) – 7.10 goals added
Feb 22 vs Fairfield Opp ELO: 1375 |
In this one, he scored 3 goals and added 4 assists in a game that Georgetown won 25 – 12 over Fairfield. He also threw in 6 ground balls for good measure. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1375, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |

Feb 18 vs Boston U Opp ELO: 1539 |
He paced the team with 7 total points (5 goals; 2 assists) against Boston U, in a game that Bryant won 15 – 10. He also threw in 1 ground ball for good measure. Repeat this against a team stronger than Boston U, and he’ll really get people talking. |

Feb 22 vs Bellarmine Opp ELO: 1399 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 1 goal against Bellarmine, in a game that Boston U won 17 – 11. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 15 ground balls and 21 faceoff wins. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. Repeat this against a team stronger than Bellarmine, and he’ll really get people talking. |
