Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week
#1 – Tommy Schelling (Lehigh) – 8.23 goals added
Feb 8 vs Utah Opp ELO: 1450 |
Utah just had no answer for Tommy Schelling. The Hawks scored 16 goals, and 5 of them were unassisted Schelling jobs. You just don’t see 5 unassisted goals very often. And Q2 was where he really did a lot of damage. That frame saw 3.4 of his total 8.2 EGA. |

#2 – Stephen Rehfuss (Syracuse) – 6.37 goals added
Feb 7 vs Colgate Opp ELO: 1422 |
#22 gets all the love. At least in upstate New York (and on Twitter) that was definitely the case. And you can understand why. This was highly touted transfer Chase Scanlan’s first game in the Dome, wearing #22, for a team with Championship Weekend or bust aspirations. But when you crunch through the numbers in the Cuse win over Colgate, it was Rehfuss that really stood out, to the tune of 6.37 EGA. And the reason: a large number of those Cuse goals were assisted by Rehfuss, and on an assisted goal, the assister shares credit with the goal scorer. So while Scanlan got the highlights and many of the plaudits, Rehfuss was the engine that drove this Orange bus. |

#3 – Dylan Watson (Georgetown) – 6.33 goals added
Feb 8 vs Lafayette Opp ELO: 1335 |
Last year’s Hoyas packed a serious one-two punch with Jake Carraway and Daniel Bucaro. That duo was a large part of why Georgetown ended the year as a top-10 team according to the Lax-ELO ratings. But all good things must come to an end, and with Bucaro graduating, it appeared that the Hoyas would have to find an alternate source of offense if they were to achieve the lofty goals that our rating system saw as a possibility. So it must have been with a great deal of relief and excitement, that Hoyas fans watched Dylan Watson go off against Lafayette. With the win, the Hoyas have moved up into the top 3 in the ELO ratings, and the potential of Watson’s production seems to validate that for the moment. |

#4 – Adam Charalambides (Rutgers) – 6.07 goals added
Feb 8 vs St. John’s Opp ELO: 1394 |
On the day, he tallied 6 goals and 1 assist against St. John’s, in a game that Rutgers won 17 – 10. He also threw in 3 ground balls for good measure. Repeat this against a team stronger than St. John’s, and he’ll really get people talking. |

#5 – Mike Robinson (Delaware) – 6.03 goals added
Feb 8 vs Mount St Marys Opp ELO: 1489 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 7 goals against Mount St Marys in a game that Delaware won 14 – 8. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 5 ground balls. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Mount St Marys was the #-21 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#6 – Grant Ament (Penn State) – 5.74 goals added
Feb 8 vs Villanova Opp ELO: 1584 |
In this one, he scored 3 goals and added 5 assists in a game that Penn State won 19 – 10 over Villanova. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 1 ground ball. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Villanova was the #-12 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#7 – Cole Williams (Johns Hopkins) – 5.22 goals added
Feb 8 vs Towson Opp ELO: 1602 |
He paced the team with 7 total points (3 goals; 4 assists) against Towson in a game that Johns Hopkins won 15 – 7. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 3 ground balls. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1602, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |

Feb 4 vs Detroit Opp ELO: 1505 |
He paced the team with 9 total points (4 goals; 5 assists) against Detroit, in a game that Ohio State won 23 – 9. Granted, there wasn’t a lot there besides the scoring, but it’s good enough to land a spot on the list since, hey, you win by scoring. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1505, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |
#14 – Mike Hawkins (Colgate) – 4.75 goals added
Feb 7 vs Syracuse Opp ELO: 1681 |
In this one, he scored 5 goals and added 1 assist against Syracuse in a game that Colgate lost 21 – 14. It was a somewhat one-dimensional day with no GBs or faceoffs, but come on: 6 total points. Repeat this against a team stronger than Syracuse, and he’ll really get people talking. |

Feb 8 vs Canisius Opp ELO: 1511 |
In this one, he scored 5 goals and added 1 assist in a game that Hobart won 22 – 8 over Canisius. |
#16 – Harry Wellford (Bucknell) – 4.74 goals added
Feb 9 vs Bryant Opp ELO: 1460 |
I’m sure he’s very generous most days, but on this day, he tallied 4 goals without an assist against Bryant in a game that Bucknell won 11 – 9. In addition to the goals, he also came up with 2 ground balls. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Bryant was the #-36 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#17 – Jacob Buck (Canisius) – 4.74 goals added
Feb 8 vs Hobart Opp ELO: 1593 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 6 goals in a game that Canisius lost 22 – 8 to Hobart. It was a somewhat one-dimensional day with no GBs or faceoffs, but come on: 6 total points. Repeat this against a team stronger than Hobart, and he’ll really get people talking. |

#19 – Luke Frankeny (Mount St Marys) – 4.66 goals added
Feb 8 vs Delaware Opp ELO: 1608 |
This was a day to take advantage of the defense, and he delivered with 5 goals against Delaware in a game that Mount St Marys lost 14 – 8. He also threw in 3 ground balls for good measure. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Delaware was the #-7 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#20 – JJ Sillstrop (Denver) – 4.62 goals added
Feb 8 vs Air Force Opp ELO: 1653 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 5 goals against Air Force, in a game that Denver won 13 – 7. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 2 ground balls. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. |
