Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week
#1 – TD Ierlan (Yale) – 9.27 goals added
Apr 27 vs Harvard Opp ELO: 1475 |
26 out of 26. Not much else to say here. Ierlan set the NCAA record by winning 26 draws without a loss. He is very good at taking faceoffs. |

#2 – Michael Sowers (Princeton) – 7.41 goals added
Apr 27 vs Cornell Opp ELO: 1801 |
4th straight game for Sowers leading the Tigers in EGA (he’s never bee below 4th). So that is his big achievement in this game against Cornell, in which the Tigers nearly put a serious (possibly fatal) dent in the Big Red’s at-large hopes. Wait, what’s that you say? He also set the Princeton career points record in this game? And that he now holds the career record with 255 points and the single-season record for Princeton with 90 points? Well then I guess he had two major accomplishments in this one. |

#3 – Ashton Wood (Mercer) – 7.35 goals added
Apr 27 vs Jacksonville Opp ELO: 1402 |
I will admit the fact that I did not know Ashton Wood’s name before this season started. Frankly, I did not know it a month ago. I’ll wager that most of you did not either. But once the Bears got into their SoCon slate, he really started to make his mark on the list of top FOGOs. This game marks the 4th consecutive game in which he amassed more than 20 face-off wins and at least 5 EGA. I would wager that there are not more than 5 or 6 FOGOs in the nation that can claim such a streak. |

#4 – James Sexton (Utah) – 7.07 goals added
Apr 27 vs Detroit Opp ELO: 1537 |
This section is ostensibly about James Sexton’s 13 point outburst against Detroit in the Utes season finale. And in fact, I had to go check the official box-score to make sure my script didn’t pull in the wrong numbers. Sexton nearly doubled his season high of 7 points (against MSM) by scoring 5 and assisting 8 goals. That means he was involved in an astounding 81% of the Utes scores. But this is also a chance for us to congratulate the team on what had to feel like an above-expectations season. (I’m sure they would tell you otherwise though.) 5 wins as a new program and much higher expectations for 2020. Congrats to the entire program. |

#5 – Justin Inacio (Ohio State) – 6.99 goals added
Apr 26 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1341 |
If that ended up being the final game of the year for Ohio State, at least Justin Inacio went out on top. If anyone were pointing fingers after a loss to Michigan, they certainly wouldn’t be pointed at him. That said, you can tell it was a rough day for the offense as a whole because Inacio’s 27.4% mark in terms of play shares shows just how little was going on after those draw wins. That mark is a full 4 percentage points higher than any other game this season. He’s a good FOGO, but you still don’t want him to account for 27.4% of the plays your team makes on a given day. |

#6 – Jackson Morrill (Yale) – 6.98 goals added
Apr 27 vs Harvard Opp ELO: 1475 |
He paced the team with 10 total points (8 goals; 2 assists) in a game that Yale won 22 – 11 over Harvard. It was a somewhat one-dimensional day with no GBs or faceoffs, but come on: 10 total points. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Harvard was the #-28 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |

#7 – Tyson Gibson (Robert Morris) – 6.64 goals added
Apr 27 vs Hobart Opp ELO: 1606 |
In this one, he scored 2 goals and added 5 assists against Hobart, in a game that Robert Morris won 16 – 15. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 7 ground balls. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Hobart was the #-4 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#8 – Davis Sampere (High Point) – 6.56 goals added
Apr 27 vs Richmond Opp ELO: 1614 |
Vintage FOGO day here. against Richmond, in a game that High Point won 15 – 14. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 18 ground balls and 22 faceoff wins. Given the importance of possession, he’s probably most proud that he had as many turnovers in the game as you did. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Richmond was the #-3 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |

#9 – Kyle Gallagher (Penn) – 6.15 goals added
Apr 27 vs Vermont Opp ELO: 1638 |
I’m sure he’s very generous most days, but on this day, he tallied 1 goal without an assist against Vermont, in a game that Penn won 12 – 10. In addition to the goals, he did contribute 13 ground balls and 18 faceoff wins. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. Repeat this against a team stronger than Vermont, and he’ll really get people talking. |

#12 – Christian Daniel (Navy) – 5.62 goals added
Apr 26 vs Boston U Opp ELO: 1683 |
He paced the team with 8 total points (5 goals; 3 assists) against Boston U in a game that Navy won 13 – 12. He also threw in 2 ground balls for good measure. |
#13 – James Burr (Boston U) – 5.61 goals added
Apr 26 vs Navy Opp ELO: 1478 |
I’m sure he’s very generous most days, but on this day, he tallied 4 goals without an assist in a game that Boston U lost 13 – 12 to Navy. In addition to the goals, he also came up with 2 ground balls. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1478, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |
#14 – Adam Charalambides (Rutgers) – 5.32 goals added
Apr 27 vs Penn State Opp ELO: 1970 |
On the day, he tallied 2 goals and 4 assists against Penn State, in a game that Rutgers lost 14 – 13. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 3 ground balls. Throw in Penn State’s ELO rating of 1970, and these stats take on whole new meaning. |
#15 – Jackson Reid (Ohio State) – 5.32 goals added
Apr 26 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1341 |
If the defense doesn’t stop you, just keep shooting, right? He gladly obliged, racking up 5 goals against Michigan, in a game that Ohio State lost 13 – 10. Add in 2 ground balls and you’ve got a pretty full stat sheet. No trillion-club here. Repeat this against a team stronger than Michigan, and he’ll really get people talking. |
#16 – Jason Simaan (Brown) – 5.21 goals added
Apr 27 vs Dartmouth Opp ELO: 1244 |
One of the few players to make this list without scoring any goals, he did drive the offense, chipping in 1 assist against Dartmouth in a game that Brown won 11 – 7. He also threw in 12 ground balls and 17 faceoff wins for good measure. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1244, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |
