Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week
#1 – Ashton Wood (Mercer) – 8.64 goals added
Apr 6 vs Furman Opp ELO: 1320 |
29 face off wins. That is just about all you need to know. Incredibly, despite their 29 to 4 face-off advantage, Mercer managed to lose this one to the Paladins of Furman. But that should not diminish the accomplishment of Mr. Wood. This was the 3rd straight game that he has led the team in EGA (thanks in large part to the high scoring games they’ve been playing). His 87% win rate set a season record, topping the 82% he recorded two games ago against VMI. I love when small-school players end up at the top of our list. The major-conference guys get lots of attention. I am glad when this list can be a vehicle to shed some light on the impressive days had by those outside of the spotlight. |

#2 – Pat Spencer (Loyola MD) – 8.55 goals added
Apr 6 vs Lehigh Opp ELO: 1656 |
Another week, another post for Spencer on the top performances list. His game against Lehigh shows just how tough he is for opposing offenses. I have argued that players who have a large percentage of their EGA coming from assisted goals end up over-valued when examining why an offense clicks. If not for those assisters, would that production still be there? Spencer is the opposite, entirely. Against Lehigh, 0% of his value came from assisted goals. He had 5 unassisted tallies and 6 assists. It all added up to a season-high EGA mark of 8.55 for him. |
#3 – Ryan Tierney (Hofstra) – 8.02 goals added
Apr 6 vs Massachusetts Opp ELO: 1688 |
Ryan Tierney has been the lead-dog for most of the year for the Pride. This marks his 6th time leading the team in EGA (out of 11 games). His 8 points were split between 4 unassisted goals, 2 assisted goals, and 2 assists. All of those numbers set or tied season-highs. His 17.4% mark in terms of play-shares was his top mark during the campaign as well. Tierney has quietly built one of the more impressive statistical seasons of any one in D1 this year. With this game under his belt, he is up to #8 in our offensive player rankings. Unfortunately, with the 4-7 mark that Hofstra is saddled with, you aren’t going to hear much about it. |
#4 – Kyle Prouty (Johns Hopkins) – 7.87 goals added
Apr 6 vs Rutgers Opp ELO: 1625 |
If you want to guess whether Hopkins won a game, and you could only pick one statistic to inform your decision, you could do worse than the team’s face-off win rate. In their 4 losses, they have been at 25%, 54%, 39%, 56%. In their wins, they have won faceoffs at the following rates: 70%, 73%, 76%, 70%, 67%, 50%. Not a perfect split, but close. The UNC win was the only win that Hopkins finished below 67%. And of course, Kyle Prouty has been the main man generating those stats. Kudos on a impressive 21-win day. |

#5 – Alex Woodall (Towson) – 7.60 goals added
Apr 6 vs Fairfield Opp ELO: 1317 |
Alex Woodall has been a mostly constant presence for a Towson team that you could certainly say has been on a rollercoaster this season. His 88% faceoff win rate against Fairfield made if virtually impossible that the Tigers were going to struggle the way they did against Hofstra, where they won just 52% of the draws. Towson is not the world-beater that it seemed they might be after Loyola. After the Fairfield game, they have the 36th ranked offense and the 39th ranked defense in D1. But with Woodall as our #1 ranked FOGO in the country, they are always going to have a chance. |

#6 – TD Ierlan (Yale) – 7.41 goals added
Apr 6 vs Dartmouth Opp ELO: 1268 |
One of the few players to make this list without scoring any goals, he did drive the offense, chipping in 1 assist against Dartmouth, in a game that Yale won 20 – 8. He also threw in 20 ground balls and 23 faceoff wins for good measure. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Dartmouth was the #-43 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |

#7 – Michael Kraus (Virginia) – 7.15 goals added
Apr 6 vs North Carolina Opp ELO: 1607 |
In this one, he scored 5 goals and added 1 assist in a game that Virginia won 11 – 10 over North Carolina. He also threw in 3 ground balls for good measure. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1607, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |
#8 – Greyson Torain (Navy) – 6.22 goals added
Apr 6 vs Colgate Opp ELO: 1519 |
In this one, he scored 5 goals and added 2 assists against Colgate, in a game that Navy won 16 – 11. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 1 ground ball. Repeat this against a team stronger than Colgate, and he’ll really get people talking. |
#9 – Austin Henningsen (Maryland) – 6.05 goals added
Apr 6 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1397 |
Vintage FOGO day here. against Michigan in a game that Maryland won 16 – 12. Add in 15 ground balls and 22 faceoff wins and you’ve got a pretty full stat sheet. No trillion-club here. But perhaps the most impressive thing was accomplishing all of that while committing exactly zero turnovers. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1397, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |

#11 – Logan Wisnauskas (Maryland) – 5.81 goals added
Apr 6 vs Michigan Opp ELO: 1397 |
He paced the team with 8 total points (5 goals; 3 assists) against Michigan in a game that Maryland won 16 – 12. He also threw in 2 ground balls for good measure. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: Michigan was the #-32 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |
#12 – Nick Hatzipetrakos (Providence) – 5.77 goals added
Apr 6 vs Georgetown Opp ELO: 1659 |
In this one, he scored 5 goals and added 3 assists in a game that Providence lost 17 – 15 to Georgetown. Granted, there wasn’t a lot there besides the scoring, but it’s good enough to land a spot on the list since, hey, you win by scoring. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. |
#13 – Andrew Hamilton (Cleveland State) – 5.59 goals added
Apr 6 vs St. Bonaventure Opp ELO: 1296 |
This was a day to take advantage of the defense, and he delivered with 1 goal in a game that Cleveland State won 18 – 5 over St. Bonaventure. As if that wasn’t enough, don’t forget the 12 ground balls and 17 faceoff wins. Now, the obligatory dose of reality: St. Bonaventure was the #-39 weakest opponent on this list. Factor that in. |

#14 – Corson Kealey (Robert Morris) – 5.51 goals added
Apr 6 vs Wagner Opp ELO: 1159 |
I’m sure he’s very generous most days, but on this day, he tallied 6 goals without an assist in a game that Robert Morris won 17 – 6 over Wagner. In addition to the goals, he also came up with 3 ground balls. Given the importance of possession, he’s probably most proud that he had as many turnovers in the game as you did. Repeat this against a team stronger than Wagner, and he’ll really get people talking. |
#15 – Grant Ament (Penn State) – 5.48 goals added
Apr 7 vs Ohio State Opp ELO: 1673 |
He paced the team with 8 total points (2 goals; 6 assists) against Ohio State in a game that Penn State won 13 – 8. Scoring is how you win the game, so despite the lack of other contributions, here we are. And zero turnovers! Coach has to love that. |

Apr 6 vs Brown Opp ELO: 1582 |
In this one, he scored 6 goals and added 1 assist against Brown, in a game that Penn won 16 – 9. He also threw in 1 ground ball for good measure. Not to diminish this game too much, but with an opponent ELO rating of 1582, it’s not as if this performance came against a world-beater. |
