The reason I wanted to throw up a recap for this game was not the comeback by UMBC to force overtime. It was actually a stretch that spanned 9 minutes in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.Overall, Brown got the better of UMBC, of course, but if you are the Retrievers, the tape during this stretch is where you look to find your path forward. In this 9 minute stretch, UMBC outscored the Bears 4-1, while turning the ball over on only one of their 9 possessions. Combine that with a shooting percentage of 50% and you get a nice little offensive profile. Indeed, over this 9 minute period, UMBC clicked at a 44% rate vs 25% for the rest of the game. You might think that the UMBC defense held the line and gave their offense a chance to climb back into the game. There is some truth to that (Brown’s TO% during this stretch jumped 5 percentage points), but by and large, it was the UMBC offense that really stood out.
