Each week, we will look back at the games that were to see which players had the largest individual performances. I say largest because the contributions that we can measure (from play by play) tend to be things that are easy to count. This includes, goals, shots, assists, turnovers, penalties, etc. We can’t measure a defender who shuts down an opposing player so completely that he doesn’t even touch the ball. Still, it is interesting to be able to identify the players that really filled it up each weekend and give them a shout out here. |
For a bit of background, in order to rank single game performances, we needed a way to condense box score stats into a single number for each player. In order to do this, we relied on our expected goal values methodology, which assigns a goal value to each type of play depending on how often it leads to a goal in the next 60 seconds. By adding up all the expected goals added for each player, we can get to that single number and these rankings. |
We have also tagged each performance with the opponent’s ELO rating. The higher the number, the stronger the opponent. This should help to give some context for each performance. Did the player feast on the dregs of D1 or did they put up these numbers against a quality opponent? |
Top Single Game Scores of the week

#1 – Td Ierlan (Yale) – 8.69 goals added
|
Feb 23 vs Penn State Opp ELO: 1720 |
To help illustrate how important Ierlan’s game against Penn State was, I’ll give you a few facts. Penn State outshot Yale 38% to 36%. Yale had a higher save percentage (26% vs 21%). The Nittany Lions had more groundballs (excluding faceoffs). The rate stats favored Penn State. If TD Ierlan didn’t give the Elis a 50 to 41 possession advantage, there is no way that Yale wins this game. Faceoff play isn’t often the difference between winning and losing; it was in this one. |

#2 – Sam Stephan (Mount St Marys) – 7.38 goals added
|
Feb 23 vs UMBC Opp ELO: 1499 |
UMBC went up by a score of 9-4 at the half in this one. The Retrievers looked like they were on their way to an easy win. Then Sam Stephan and the 3rd quarter happened. Of his 7.38 EGA, nearly half came in the 3rd quarter alone. He won 9 faceoffs and scored his lone goal of the day. UMBC outplayed Mount for much of this one, but in that 3rd quarter, you’d have been hard-pressed to tell which one was the favorite. The challenge for Mount, or any underdog, is obviously sustaining that type of performance for 60 minutes. |

#3 – Brendan Sunday (Towson) – 7.01 goals added
|
Feb 23 vs Georgetown Opp ELO: 1644 |
This was a game where Sunday made his mark as a facilitator, to a point. Overall, 35% of the value he produced came from assisting Tiger goals. He accumulated 3 EGA through 3 quarters, half of which came from his three assists. But in the 4th quarter, when Towson really put this game away, he took on a more aggressive offensive attitude. Of his total 7.10 EGA, a full 4.02 game in the decisive 4th quarter. He scored 4 goals on 4 shots and still managed to dish out 4 assists. Towson started the 4th quarter up 2 goals at 8-6. Thanks in large part to Brendan Sunday, they ended the frame running away from the Hoyas 14-8. Big test up next for the Tigers as they take on #1 Loyola on Wednesday evening. |
