    If Team A is demolishing Team B, it is common for Coach A to then, after the fact, substitute starters with reserves. It’s like saying that better teams celebrate more. Playing reserves simply indicates that you’re winning by a lot.

    Totally agree with the point above. This also explains the spike in the first half of the season. Non-conference games are more frequent in the first half of the season, and since non-conference games have a higher potential for a talent mismatch than conference games, there is a high likelihood of a blowout and coaches emptying the bench.
